At Backwoods, Austin, we know that we are lucky to live in such a great vibrant city with a vital outdoor-oriented community, but we also feel incredibly fortunate to work every day with such a talented and knowledgeable team of co-workers! Every single person on the staff has a valuable contribution to make and we all benefit because of the diversity of our interests, hobbies, and pursuits. Whether we are helping a family that is new to camping choose a sleeping bag for each family member, or discussing the finer points of trail running with a local running coach, the chance to share our experience with a customer is what makes the job so rewarding.
Our favorite event is Ladies Night; it’s a way for women to bring their friends and just take over the store. Between the impromptu fashion shows, and shoe and boot shopping, it’s a huge success with a lot of crazy good fun for everyone! Ladies Night gets everyone talking about a range of subjects from rock climbing, the best tent camping equipment, to the use of trekking poles and of course we are always eager to start a dialog on any outdoor pursuit.
Part of what makes Backwoods such a compelling place to visit are the various personalities and experiences of our staff. One of the employees is an engineer, another teaches cross-fit and is a yogi; our staff also includes a retired fireman, an Air Force Veteran and a professional photographer. We are all united by our love of the outdoors and several staff members specialize in adventure travel and have visited the following foreign destinations: Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Denmark, North Africa, Thailand, Sweden, Canada, New Zealand, Amsterdam, Mexico, Greece, Austria, Belize and traveled throughout the United States to Hawaii, Zion, Yellowstone, the City of Rocks, Yosemite, Denali, and Glacier National Park.
To ensure we are best able to advise and assist customers, we field-test our outdoor gear at Reimers Ranch, Pace Bend Park and Lake Travis. Whether we are setting up a camping tent or trying a new style of hiking boots, we pay attention to the little details that customers will want to know. Our customers matter more to us than any other aspect of our job; we care just as much that a soccer mom finds a great shoulder bag as we do that a rock climbing expert is fitted with the optimal harness. Our store has been open since 2008 and every day, we open the doors and put helping the customer succeed at the top of our list. So the next time you find yourself wondering if your carry-on bag will actually suffice for your adventure trip, or how to choose the best fitting backpack for both hiking and sightseeing, you need look no further than Backwoods in Austin.

Reimers Ranch Park Submitted By: Tyler Gross (Backwoods Photographer)

The Reimers Ranch parcel is already well known and well loved by many potential park users. The sizeable Central Texas rock-climbing community views Reimers Ranch as a destination with world class rock climbing. The active local mountain biking community likewise enjoys Reimers Ranch’s over 18 miles of trails through the classic Central Texas landscape. Local anglers have come to Reimers’ for generations to fish for white bass in the Pedernales River. The Pogue Springs Preserve/Hogge Reserve component of the land acquisition is less known but equally spectacular with Pedernales River frontage, deep canyons and panoramic views of the Texas Hill Country. This is the place to mountain bike. Owned by a cattle/goat rancher, this mountain bike ranch has everything you are looking for. Dizzying downhills, flowing singletrack and climbs that will knock the wind out of you are all available on the 26 miles of upper and lower loop. It is very isolated, and is absolutely gorgeous. Be sure and launch off of hospital hill on the lower loop! Also check out the bike races here, a must do! Check out

Lost Maples Submitted By: Dylan Carey (Official Backwoods Austin Outsider)

About 3 hours southwest of Austin lies Lost Maples state park. In November this park is home to numerous orange/red/yellow Maple trees changing colors in the fading seasons. This park has plenty of trails to isolate yourself, and great backcountry camp sites to haul your gear in and stay a night. Here you will find great hills to test your legs on. My favorite camp site is site C. For a real challenge, see if you can beat my wife and I’s time of hiking the entire park with your fully loaded pack! (3.5 hours) Check out
Lost Maple’s State Park Website for more information on hours and fees.

Rogers Park Submitted By: Dylan Carey (Official Backwoods Austin Outsider)

Lake Belton is our home away from home. You can put in whatever type of craft you prefer, Canoe/kayak/boat/jet-ski. Spend a day on the water and enjoy cooling off in the summer. For a real treat, head to a cove on the SSW part of the lake, near Sparta park, and get a deep tissue massage by the 60 foot waterfall. After you’ve cooled off, head over to Rogers Park and climb “The third nipple” V7 among numerous other routes backed up against the lake wall. Check out
