Backwoods in Omaha, Nebraska
Follow Us: Facebook ››
Located in Mid-Town Omaha, our Backwoods store has the benefit of being in an older neighborhood where we are close to all the action, and people are naturally interested in everything from fleece clothing, to tents, to adventure travel. Our customers come to us for the best possible hiking boots, backpacks, and rock climbing gear. We are a melting pot of enthusiasts and include folks from empty-nest travelers to college students and young families, and Boy Scouts headed to Jamboree – our Backwoods community is a true village!
In 2004, we moved to our current location in Tower Park and the store just keeps getting better! There’s always fresh coffee for all, and people who miss bookstores or want more of an outdoors feel than a coffee house provides love to read and relax in the comfy leather chairs of our library lounge. We enjoy talking with customers about their upcoming adventure travel trips. Our staff has journeyed to Europe (France, Italy, Germany, Austria) Great Britain (England, Whales) Canada (Nova Scotia, Vancouver), The Bahamas, Jamaica and Mexico and we are asked to recommend everything from casual clothing to mountaineering gear. It’s a great way to spend the day and actually get paid!
We also have a lot of fun at our store events; on Ladies Night we serve wine and have giveaways to add to the festivities. Everyone enjoys seeing women in their business attire trying on barefoot shoes and hiking boots. For the rock climbing crew, we hung a rope from a beam so customers can try on various harnesses and then “sit” while suspended from the climbing rope to help choose the most comfortable fit. Lots of regulars stop by with their dogs too; one of our favorites is Joe’s dog, Baca, short for Chewbaca, a charming little pug that goes EVERYWHERE with Joe.
Nebraskans are lucky because we live in a great state for outdoor pursuits! Day-long hiking trips to Platte River State Park, Schramm State Recreational Area, Fontenelle Forest, and Neil Woods are really popular. The best place to try out camping gear is Hitchcock Nature Center near Honey Creek, Iowa where the terrain is quite hilly. They have a few backcountry camping pads so you can do an overnight backpacking trip there; it’s great for beginners or individuals with limited vacation time! So whenever you get ready for your next outdoor pursuit, stop by Backwoods at Tower Park and you’ll feel right at home knowing you’ll find the gear you need and a helpful staff with the experience to help you make the right selections.

The BWCA (Boundary Waters Canoe Area) Submitted By: Timothy Boland (Official Backwoods Omaha Outsider)

10 Hours from Omaha. Ely, MN.. entrance to the BWCA (boundary waters canoe area). Ely is a cute little logging town, albeit touristy as well and is one of two main entry points to the BWCA. I go up here usually twice a year (Spring and Fall) to paddle the wilderness lakes that are accessible only to canoes. It's a national treasure of wilderness. Here you can go several days without seeing people (especially if you push further north across the border into Canadas adjouning Quetico). There are Moose, Wolves, Eagles, Loons and lots of other wildlife. Getting up early in the morning on a quiet lake campsite, firing up the stove, cooking up some pancakes, and hitting the foggy water for a solo paddle is as good as it gets. For more information go to

Entrance Fee:
$20 per permit group (up to 9 people) Adult: $16 per trip Youth (17 and under): $8 per trip

Rocky Mountain National Park Submitted By: Timothy Boland (Official Backwoods Omaha Outsider)

9 Hours from Omaha. Rocky Mountain National Park. I spent a lot of time going here over the last 10 years when my main outdoor focus was climbing. A long drive across the Nebraska Plains and into the front range brings you here for some high altitude fresh air. I always stop at the Dounut Haus for some lard fried dounuts (energy, right?!) and then into the park. I love Longs Peak, I remember hiking up to the Diamond in 2002 and my jaw dropping. First time up the East Face was one of the best, airiest climbs I had ever been on, and still one of the best. I have gone back several winters for ice climbing in the park since then, hitting classics such as Hidden Falls, and Knotchtop with my mentor Rob Cotter. The Kieners route in winter is a must for mountaineers and it took me two attempts to get up it because of a failed attempt due to a huge snow dump. Besides the climbing, I have enjoyed fly fishing the Big Thompson, although I seem to land less fish than my Denver and Fort Collins area friends Check out
Rocky Mountain National Park Website for more information on hours and fees.
Entrance Fee:
Automobile: $20 - Valid for seven consecutive days, including date of purchase. Pedestrians, bicycles, motorcycles and mopeds: $10 per person.

Yellow River State Park Submitted By: Timothy Boland (Official Backwoods Omaha Outsider)

7 Hours from Omaha. Yellow River State Park, Northeast Iowa. I picked this because hardly anyone else would! This is one of the places that captured my love of the outdoors when I was a kid. I would go up here with my Dad and this is where I learned to hike, fish, use a campstove, set up a tent, and get a campfire going. Oh, and whittle spears! You can canoe, fly fish, bird watch, and enjoy the more subtle beauty of the midwest!
