Located in Mid-Town Omaha, our Backwoods store has the benefit of being in an older neighborhood where we are close to all the action, and people are naturally interested in everything from fleece clothing, to tents, to adventure travel. Our customers come to us for the best possible hiking boots, backpacks, and rock climbing gear. We are a melting pot of enthusiasts and include folks from empty-nest travelers to college students and young families, and Boy Scouts headed to Jamboree – our Backwoods community is a true village!
In 2015, we moved to our current location in Aksarben Village and the store just keeps getting better! There’s always fresh coffee for all, and people who miss bookstores or want more of an outdoors feel than a coffee house provides love to read and relax in the comfy leather chairs of our library lounge. We enjoy talking with customers about their upcoming adventure travel trips. Our staff has journeyed to Europe (France, Italy, Germany, Austria) Great Britain (England, Wales) Canada (Nova Scotia, Vancouver), The Bahamas, Jamaica and Mexico and we are asked to recommend everything from casual clothing to mountaineering gear. It’s a great way to spend the day and actually get paid!
We also have a lot of fun at our store events; on Ladies Night we serve wine and have giveaways to add to the festivities. Everyone enjoys seeing women in their business attire trying on barefoot shoes and hiking boots. For the rock climbing crew, we hung a rope from a beam so customers can try on various harnesses and then “sit” while suspended from the climbing rope to help choose the most comfortable fit. Lots of regulars stop by with their dogs too; one of our favorites is Joe’s dog, Baca, short for Chewbaca, a charming little pug that goes EVERYWHERE with Joe.
Nebraskans are lucky because we live in a great state for outdoor pursuits! Day-long hiking trips to Platte River State Park, Schramm State Recreational Area, Fontenelle Forest, and Neil Woods are really popular. The best place to try out camping gear is Hitchcock Nature Center near Honey Creek, Iowa where the terrain is quite hilly. They have a few backcountry camping pads so you can do an overnight backpacking trip there; it’s great for beginners or individuals with limited vacation time! So whenever you get ready for your next outdoor pursuit, stop by Backwoods at Tower Park and you’ll feel right at home knowing you’ll find the gear you need and a helpful staff with the experience to help you make the right selections.
